Kalahari Desert: A Paradise You Must See

It is one of the most beautiful deserts in the world. On many occasions it is known under the name of the red desert, due to the reddish color of the sand that forms it. It is a must to go there as it is one of the best Family Travel Destination.

We are talking about a really very wide desert, which occupies just over 700,000 square meters of surface. It is so large that it occupies part of 3 countries.

These countries that can enjoy this desert are Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, that is, it is located in the southern part of the African continent.

It is important to remember that Kalahari means “great thirst” in English. If we translate it, we can realize that the reddish color is due to the little rainfall that occurs in the desert and the continuous sun that splashes its sands. This causes the sand to take on this characteristic reddish color.

But not all parts of this desert are dry. There are some parts that have continuous rainfall. This area is where we can find more life, thanks to the plants proliferating among the reddish sand.

Of course, temperatures change radically from day to night. While 40º can be easily exceeded during the day, at night temperatures can drop to 0º.

Climate and temperature record

As we have just mentioned, temperatures have a great thermal amplitude from day to night. During the day the temperature in summer is usually around 40º, while in winter it is around 28º on average.

On the other hand, the temperatures at night drop radically to 0º or even less in winter. That is, in the desert you go from a scorched sun to freezing temperatures.

On some occasions, it has been recorded up to 70 degrees in summer in full sun. Although the temperature drops even down to 30 degrees just a few inches deep in the sand.

If we focus on the rainfall in the Kalahari Desert, we must highlight the wet and dry years. The wet years usually occur every 13 or 15 years.

In this case, the average annual precipitation is only 500 ml of water, while, during the rest of the years, the average precipitation is only 100 ml. For this reason, we are talking about a large territory in which we cannot find surface water no matter how much we walk, with the exception of the delta.

Flora and fauna in the Kalahari Desert

One of the things that stand out the most about this desert is the large amount of fauna and flora that exists. All this is possible thanks to the fact that its sands allow the outside temperature to be greatly reduced, while in some areas of the desert more than enough rains occur to keep the flora alive.

Within the flora we should highlight, for example, the “Hoodia Gordonii” plant. It really is a very cactus-like plant. This plant stands out for having a great capacity to store water inside, through which it is able to survive long periods of desert drought.

Also noteworthy is the delta area within the Kalahari Desert. This delta is considered by the inhabitants of the desert as a great oasis. After a visit to this desert, you can also go to luxury destinations in South Africa to make the most out of your trip.

The Glamping Experience in the Kenyan Paradise

Sleeping in a comfortable lodge facing Kilimanjaro is one of the exclusive luxuries that Kenya offers. Knowing the nature and its cycles in a private safari, enjoying the sunrise from the safe hotels built in trees, watching the animals that come to drink in the lagoon under our feet are the kind of experiences that await you there. Kenya is the destination of dreamers, adventurers, lovers of wildlife and nature but also of colonial glamor. The glamping (glamorous camping) is proposed as an alternative to the honeymoon destinations in South Africa, combining all the comforts that these offer with the freedom to be in direct contact with the environment. This is one of the characteristics of Kenya; the traveler can enjoy endless accommodation in nature without reducing comfort or security.

GAZELLES, ZEBRAS, AND WILDEBEEST WHEN TO TRAVEL TO KENYA?

One million wildebeest, three hundred thousand gazelles, and fifty thousand zebras travel 8,000 km each year in search of pasture, following a circular route marked by the rains that pass through the Serengeti Park and the Maasai Mara reserve.
