If you are wondering what to see in New Zealand you have come to the right place. The first thing we want to tell you is that New Zealand is truly another world.
It is a place that has only been inhabited for the last 700 years. In addition, its geographical isolation has created a native vegetation and different from those of the other continents of the world.
One of the most curious things is that New Zealand is not even on the same continental shelf as Australia, but rather has its own and that is why its animals and species are different from Australians.
Everything you have to see in New Zealand
To put ourselves in context a bit, say that New Zealand is two islands, the North Island and the South Island. The North Island is smaller and is of square shape, but it is also the most inhabited and the one with the largest cities, including Auckland or Wellington. Almost four million New Zealanders live here.
The South Island is longer and narrower, more mountainous and it is also where we find the most spectacular landscapes. Only a little over a million people live on this island.
To enjoy a route through New Zealand, we always recommend visiting both islands. From Wellington, the capital, you can take a ferry to the south island.
Of course, there are other islands in New Zealand, smaller, the most famous being the Chatham Islands because of a completely different culture developed from the Moriori.
Attractions of the North Island
Auckland with the Sky Tower, Auckland
The normal thing is a route through New Zealand is to enter through Auckland, since it is the largest city in the country. Besides having the airport, Auckland is also a tourist city where we recommend visiting the Sky Tower and enjoying brutal 360º views.
Strolling through the port and its Promenade, seeing all the boats, and visiting New Zealand holiday destinations is also great. Auckland is almost completely surrounded by the ocean and there are thousands of sailing boats around all the time.
It is the only city in New Zealand with more than a million inhabitants and it has all the services of any big city: shops, clubs, theaters, cinemas etc.
Hole in the rock, Paihia
In the Paihia area there are several things to see and do at the luxury destinations New Zealand. On the way from Auckland to Paihia you have to pass through the Parry Kauri Park or the Waipoua Forest, both ideal places to see the kauri, a native tree of the country sacred to the Moriori.
On the other hand, Russell is also worth a visit, which was the first settlement in the country and has the oldest church in all of New Zealand.
Huka waterfall, Rotorua and Tongariro National Park
Further south we find the area of Rotorua, where we can see its hot springs or visit the Maori town Ohinemutu Village. This area is for enjoying nature, including the Lady Knox Geyser and Huka Waterfall. The town of Tapo is also worth a visit if we have time to spare.
On the other hand, in the Tongariro National Park we can see part of the scenes of The Lord of the Rings. There are also different hiking trails that we can do with different difficulty, depending on what we want to walk.
