National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya was founded in 1921. In 1960 the educational institution was named after M.I.Pirogov, in 1984 he was awarded the Order of Honor. Since 1994, the Vinnytsia Medical Institute has been certified and accredited to the IV level of accreditation and has been granted the status of the University. The national status of the university was acquired in 2002, in the same year it was awarded the diplomas of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The Medical University has traditions in educational, research activity, an organization of the students’ leisure, relations with the graduates.
At the medical university 6250 students are trained, including 2080 foreigners. In total about 44000 doctors, among them 2100 specialists of the highest level, possessing the Candidate’s and Ph.D., M.D. degrees, including more than 7500 foreign citizens from 106 foreign countries of Europe, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Africa) have been trained.

Having worked with foreign students, everyone’s regional, religious, national, individual and psychological features are taken into account. Active acquaintance of the foreigners with the history and culture of Ukraine, national traditions, life-style of modern Ukrainian youths is carried out even to this day.
Physical training is included in the curriculum of all the departments. Students of Vinnytsia Medical university attend various sports sections, play football, basketball and volleyball as members of united university teams and participate in championships of Ukraine among medical universities. Attending gyms and sports grounds is free of charge.

In Vinnytsia there are long-lasting warm summers with a sufficient quantity of moisture, and winters are comparatively short. An average temperature is -5.8 degree C in January and 18.3 degree C in July. An average annual precipitation is 638 mm (25 in).
The university consists of: administration, education, scientific, medical diagnostic, economic and auxiliary divisions. The main scientific academic units of the university, which train students and post-gradute students in related specialities are the faculties. The faculty includes clinical departments, as well as the departments in which humanitarian, socio-economic and fundamental disciplines are studied.
